Atmosphere, moving

A vaulted hall seen from inside, in two inks with no intermediate values. Light enters only through the clerestory, and the lit volume of air between the eye and each surface is left as bare paper, so tone is carried entirely by how tightly a surface is ruled: near the eye the ruling closes to unbroken black, and deep in the hall it opens toward single hairlines.

Moving, the hall is entered. The bays advance, each arch swelling past the eye while a new one opens at the vanishing point, and the shaft sweeps the nave. Because the bays are spaced geometrically, one step of the advance returns the picture to itself, so it loops with no seam.

This is the furthest of the conversions from its source, and the difference is worth stating plainly. The published still casts every pixel by hand through analytic geometry, planes and cylinders and wall slabs pierced by arched holes, so that occlusion is a true depth test; that is seconds of work for one frame and not something to run sixty times a second. This is the same hall under the same rule about ruling and the same two inks, built from arch outlines in one-point perspective instead of from a depth test. It is a reimplementation rather than a port, as all of these are, but more of one than the others.

Running in your browser at 120 beats a minute. A seed decides the piece's fixed choices, the ones its setup makes once, so Generate gives a new version of the same program rather than a new moment of this one; the time and the beat are handed in separately, which is why the same seed always draws the same frame at the same moment. /art/vj supplies a tempo you set, tap, or let it hear.
