Black rules stand at an even pitch, ticked off along the bottom edge, and coloured bands cross them square. One point of pressure pushes each rule off its nominal position by an amount greatest at the centre of the field and zero at its rim, so the grey rules mark where the black ones should have stood. Only the bars deepest in the field swell and turn red. The yellow lies outside the rim, where nothing moved.
